Today we’re talking about time boxing. At the core it’s simple. Assign a fixed period of time to a task, turn off all distractions, set a time slot, and stick to it.
A hack I found that works well is using hourglasses with different time periods. I have a 3 minute, 5 minute, 15, 30, 45, and an hour. I’m using one right now to make sure this episode doesn’t go over three minutes. I like them because they’re visual and they work so much better than a digital timer. They don’t cost that much on Amazon and I will link to them in the show notes for you. I’ll give you a tip up front. Estimating time for tasks will be challenging at first.
Stick with it.
You’ll get better with practice and before you know it, you’ll be flying through your tasks with ease, time to spare. Here’s the cool thing. Scientific studies support that timeboxing works.
A study by the University of California, Los Angeles found that people who use timeboxing were more productive than those that didn’t. Another study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that timeboxing can help to improve task performance and reduce stress. Yet another study published in the Journal of Business Research found that timeboxing can help to improve team collaboration. The study participants were divided into two groups, one group using time boxing and the other not using it. You guessed it, the group that used time boxing was found to be more collaborative.
If you’re looking for a way to improve your productivity, reduce stress, and improve team collaboration, recommend giving time boxing a try today.
Your move.
