Something New I Learned: From one Puffer Jacket to Worldwide Brand
In 1936, Eddie Bauer went on a fishing trip in the Olympic Peninsula dressed in a wool winter coat. The cold almost killed him when freezing rain caught him far from shelter. His clothing soaked and icing over, Bauer began to feel drowsy, the early signs of hypothermia. He fired off three rifle shots to signal a friend hiking far in front of him and then fell asleep against a tree. He wrote later that he would’ve been “a goner if my partner hadn’t come along.”
Three years later, the “cold-proof jacket” was born: an olive green quilted puffer coat that Bauer went on to manufacture for the US Air Force, and then the world. The rest is history.
Lesson: Whether starting a company, a new product line, or service, start by solving one problem that you have yourself that’s so painful that others have it too and will pay to fix it. And…start with one halo product, not a whole line. Sell the living daylights out of that one product, then see where that takes you.

What I’m Reading
Breakthrough Advertising by Eugene M. Schwartz
Copywriters and direct marketers regard this book as one of the most important books ever written about persuasion, copywriting, marketing, and human behavior.
It’s tailored towards a more advanced marketer and it’s a book that I read a chapter every once in a while because reading it all the way through is a tough. There is a lot to take in and think about.
Recommended for almost every business owner, even if you’re not doing your marketing or copywriting it will educate you on the right questions to be asking.
The book is expensive because it’s out of print. Best price I found was on Amazon here. I paid $330.80 for it. As of this writing I saw some used versions listed at the link for $309. Yea, that’s expensive. But, I had to ask myself what the cost of not reading was? And…I wrote it off as business expense. Ask your accountant if you can do the same. Best price here >>>
What I’m Watching
Recommended by a friend, it’s a story of a journalist who investigates the case of Anna Delvey, the Instagram-legendary heiress who stole the hearts and money of New York elites.
Backdrop is about Anna and her boyfriend building businesses. Shows how startups can blow through and waste money and while Anna at first seems to be scamming people, you find yourself asking yourself, is she really just an entrepreneur who took things too far and let wanting to be liked get in the way?
Not what I expected and has me clicking next episode without hesitation, you know that “next episode” link in the lower right side of the screen that you instantly hit “skip intro” and get back into it 🙂 Watch on Netflix.
